Our Reputation: We Have Free Will
Subhadra-mayi dd answers David Greensberg

I know that everything is under Krishna's control. I don't doubt that. But we also have free will. We are supposed to engage in devotional service to please Krishna.

But a lot goes on in the name of devotional service that doesn't have anything to do with Krishna consciousness. And consider for yourself. Doesn't Krishna have a choice in whether he considers something to be of high quality or low quality devotional service? Or even that it’s not devotional service at all?

One friend of mine once said that customer service is what the customer thinks it is. Devotional service is what Krishna thinks it is. Sometimes we are blind to this, in others and in ourselves. There are many motives for being in the Krishna consciousness movement and engaging in so-called devotional service.

We have to look into our own hearts and check. Am I coming to mangala aratika to see this beautiful aratika ceremony of the Lord, or am I coming so the temple president won’t get on my case? Am I performing a high-profile service because I have to capacity to look after the devotees under my care and know how to effectively push on this movement, or is it the popularity status, maybe even with, God forbid, the opposite sex? Just check.

My point is that blunders get made by devotees. I don't care about that as long as it gets recognized as such and gets rectified. Not that we put the blame on Krishna's back when things go wrong and then say that it's all under His control. There's a difference in consciousness in that.

Your servant,
Subhadra-mayi dd
