Seeing with
the Eyes of Scripture David Greensberg answers Subhadra-mayi dd
The sankirtan movement is the entrance into the transcendental realm. The activities of the participants are transcendental, even if they are not purely motivated. This is the special benediction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. The pastimes of Sri Caitanya are non-different then the pastimes of Sri Radha Krsna. This is the reality, although at first the desire of the participants may not be completely pure, through participation in the sankirtan yajna, one destroys one’s material desires. The sastra describes free will as being minute, or limited. We are all following the path that we are being led on by God. In the Bhagavad-Gita, Krsna states "I am directing the wanderings of all living entities." As Paramatma, God is leading us on a path of purification. To the enlightened devotee everything is part of that reality. There is no other influence. The idea of blaming Krsna, as you stated, is a misunderstanding of what you perceive as wrong or impure. The sankirtan yajna and its participants are not to be judged in a materialistic thought process. We are advised to see the devotee engaged in the sankirtan movement as being a resident of the spiritual world. This is seeing with the eyes of sastra. The faultfinding propensity is due to the faulty vision of the faultfinder. The proper way to see the activities of the sankirtan devotee is with a vision that sees the desire of the Supreme Personality of Godhead being satisfied. This is transcendental vision. In this way, we are freed from the misconception of seeing the transcendental world as a mundane place with mundane activities acted out by impure mundane people. Nothing could be farther from the truth. So-called impure activities or thoughts are not seen by the Personality of Godhead as such. The devotee engaged in the service of the devotee, engaged in the service of Sri Caitanya’s transcendental lila, is more pleasing to the Lord then thousands upon millions of sages and yogis free from impurities meditating upon the form of the Lord. This vision is the most pleasing attitude we can have in the eyes of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. © CHAKRA 1 May 2002 |
