Women:
Education or Marriage? Name withheld
Hare Krsna. I have heard and read Srila Prabhupada's statements about karmi education (mainstream society's universities and colleges), both in terms of devotees generally receiving education from these institutions and also in terms of females being highly educated. I accept that in Vedic culture, there is no need for women to have a high education because their main roles are as wife, mother, and servant of Krsna. But coming from a non-devotee family, I am finding it very difficult to explain to my parents that I don't need to become a doctor, businesswoman, etc., that I would be quite satisfied being a Vedic woman (at least, trying to be one). I know many other devotee women must have had this same struggle, and I'm asking for advice. Have any women out there regretted not getting a formal education in exchange for family life? How did you explain your life choices to your parents? Thank you. © CHAKRA 2 November 2002 |
