Please Help Mayapur Cows
By Hare Krsna dasi

CHAKRA (Mayapur, India) - November 10, 2000: CHAKRA has recently posted information about the need for help for the flood clean-up in Mayapur. Much help is needed, especially to help build the gurukula to a more flood-resistant facility. Certainly, the loss of buildings and teaching materials in the gurukula is a heartbreaking situation. One purpose of the gurukula is to help train our future brahmanas, and as we know, Krishna is always concerned with the welfare and comfort of the brahmanas.

But, even more important to Krishna than the comfort of the brahmanas -- Srila Prabhupada informs us -- is the comfort of the cows:

For the cowherd men and the cows, Krishna is the supreme friend. Therefore He is worshiped by the prayer namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca. His pastimes in Gokula, His dhama, are always favorable to the brahmanas and the cows. His first business is to give all comfort to the cows and the brahmanas. In fact, comfort for the brahmanas is secondary, and comfort for the cows is His first concern.
- Srimad Bhagavatam 10.8.16 Purport

Reports up to now have not given us any indication whether ISKCON Mayapur's 108 cows have survived the flood -- hopefully they have. Certainly Mayapura's cow program, the Nitya Go-Sevaka charity fund, will need help to rebuild. Devotees can contact the Mayapura Project to learn how to give funds to support Lord Madhava's cow program.

We hope that the GBC will soon provide details as to the situation of Lord Madhava's cows in the aftermath of the flooding.

But, even before the flood, the cow's chief herdsman, Nanda Krishna Das posted a report last July outlining the need for funding to complete measures to protect the cows against flooding, and plans to increase the cows' grazing area. He also presented a complete list of the cows. Not only does the cow program need to be repaired, the development of a solid ox power program is vital to insure the welfare of the bull calves. So funding is necessary both to rebuild and improve the quality of Mayapur's cow protection program. Nanda Krishna Prabhu's report below outlines some details of plans to improve facilities:

(From ISKCON Mayapura GBC Cow Report, July 2, 2000, submitted by Nanda Krishna Das)
