Book Review: Sri Hari Bhakti Kalpa Latika

NEW BOOK: Sri Hari Bhakti Kalpa Latika, The Wish Fulfilling Creeper of Devotional Service to Lord Hari. Compiled by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.

Produced and Published by Isvara dasa

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura originally discovered a copy of this delightful book more than a hundred years ago. Though the actual author is unknown but because of the contents of the book, which is pure unalloyed bhakti, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura translated it into Bengali and published it many times.

At the beginning of the book is a foreword by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, The Treasure of Bhakti. This summarizes Lord Caitanya's teaching to Srila Rupa Goswami. He describes the ways in which a devotee must take care of the creeper of devotional service so it can grow nicely. When the creeper eventually attains the lotus feet of Lord Krishna, the fruit of the creeper, prema, grows, ripens, and drops to the ground. At this stage, the gardener can taste the luscious juice of the fruit of love.

The book itself gives wonderful descriptions of the glories of the Lord and His devotees, especially the gopis of Vraja, the author's prayers for devotional service and the Lord's mercy, the nine processes of devotional service, and the glories of devotional service. It closes with the following words, "This book is filled with the nectarean knowledge of pure devotional service. Those who are not envious of the devotees of the Lord, and who regularly hear, read, and praise this book will be able to cast off the darkness of this material world and attain the most effulgent, blissful, and nectarean abode of Sri Vishnu."
