Dallas Temple Needs Your Help Now
ISKCON's Kalachandjis Restaurant and Palace at ISKCON Dallas, Texas, needs you to write to our Mayor and Council Members to prevent McDonalds from building a drive-through restaurant right in the middle of our quiet residential neighborhood.
However, before they can build, they need permission from the mayor and city council to rezone the proposed lot. Our entire neighborhood is opposed to the rezoning, but apparently that is not enough. Please give us your support by faxing letters opposing the rezoning to the mayor and city council members. The letters should be faxed to the following individuals:
Mayor Ron Kirk (fax #) 214-670-3409
Mayor Pro Tem Mary Poss 214-670-3409
Deputy Mayor Pro Tem John Loza 214-670-3409
Council Members:
Laura Miller 214-670-4637
Maxine Thornton-Reese 214-670-4637
Donald W. Hill 214-670-4637
Leo V. Chaney Jr. 214-670-4637
James L. Fantroy 214-670-4637
Mitchell Rasansky 214-670-4637
Dr. Elba Garcia 214-670-5115
Ed Oakley 214-670-5115
Alan Walne 214-670-5115
Lois Finkelman 214-670-5115
Sandy Greyson 214-670-5115
Veletta Forsythe Lill 214-670-5115
If you prefer, you can also mail these letters to: 1500 Marilla Street, Dallas, TX 75201.
In addition, if you prefer to email your letter, go to http://www.dallascityhall.org/dallas/html/contact_mcc.html
At the bottom of the page, click the link to email the mayor and council members, all at one time. But, it is very important to FAX the letters as well. We cannot stress this enough.
Reasons many give for opposing McDonalds
SAFETY FOR CHILDREN: Exposure of our city's children to increased traffic as Kalachandji School is located directly across from the proposed McDonalds site, and another community school is going to be built on the other corner in less than one year.
TRAFFIC CONCERNS: The existing streets are not wide enough to handle the traffic for a drive-through restaurant. There are inadequate traffic controls on Philips and Fairview. The exits from I-30 are dangerous and not designed for high volumes of traffic. There will be proliferation of 18-wheelers on our small residential streets both for delivering supplies to McDonalds and also from truck drivers coming to eat. It will be dangerous to our high volume pedestrian area.
HISTORIC EAST DALLAS: The residential character of our neighborhood will be threatened. This is an historic area of Dallas that needs help to rebuild, not more fast food restaurants. One building that would be torn down in the process of this McDonalds construction is nearly 100 years old!
TRASH AND POLLUTION: There will be increased amounts of trash, noise from drive-through, as well as light pollution, which will destroy the quiet enjoyment of our neighborhood.
Please put these issues and any others in your own words. Just cutting and pasting these points will not get their attention. We need your help and the time is NOW! Please help preserve the special quality of this neighborhood. There are dozens of possible locations for a new McDonalds in this part of town that would not effect any residential neighborhoods. We are not opposing business and economic development, just the affect this rezoning would have on our residential neighborhood.
In addition to sending a letter to each of the listed city leaders, please also make your feelings known in person by attending the Dallas City Council Meeting on Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at 1:00 p.m. in the Dallas City Council Chamber in Downtown Dallas.
Thank you.
