Singing and
Chanting for George by Dasarath das
On Sunday, December 23rd, the ISKCON temple in Tucson, Arizona, hosted a special memorial service for George Harrison. The event was advertised by the local news media and at our Govinda’s restaurant, which has earned a lot of acclaim over the ten years that it has been operating. The program for Sriman George began with the playing of the hot new video by Nrsinghananda prabhu (ITV) entitled "A Hare Krishna Tribute to George Harrison." The audience of about 100 fans and spiritual people really enjoyed the film. One lady, who came from New Mexico, said that she never new that George was so connected with the Hare Krishna Movement. Nrsinghananda and Arcita (from BBT, who did the editing) really deserve huge congratulations and thanks from the worldwide devotee community and the public at large, for putting together such a thorough documentation on George’s spiritual life. It is very ecstatic, and I believe that temples can sell a lot of these videos to their congregation. It even contains a personal interview with George, who answers questions by preaching Vaishnava philosophy. After the film, a few local musicians, an accomplished sitar player and guitarist, each performed some songs by George Harrison. When an unannounced guest from the audience volunteered to play "My Sweet Lord," the crowd went transcendentally crazy, singing and chanting along with the words. Next, our special guest, Ganapati Swami, gave a short talk and told some other stories about George and about how George was a guru to so many people worldwide. Maharaj explained that, through his music, Sriman George put so many millions of people in touch with the Hare Krishna mantra and the philosophy of Krishna consciousness, and how after his disappearance, even so many more people are beginning or continuing to hear about Krishna through his life’s story and music. After Maharaj’s talk, there was arotik to the Deities, and during the arotik, everyone came up to a nicely decorated memorial altar and offered candles and incense to their beloved "guru." A wonderful feast of Krishna prasadam commenced the evening’s festivities. The whole event was favorably covered by channel 9 (ABC) news. Srila Prabhupada ki jaya!
