Festival of Lights in Utah

The Krishna Temple at 8628 S State St in Spanish Fork invites everyone to come celebrate Deewali on Sat. Nov 2 from 6 pm: classical and folk dancing, live music, drama, ceremony of lights, huge vegetarian feast, and offering of respects to a live cow.

The Indian New Year is traditionally heralded with the Festival of Lights (Deepa means "lights"). Households put lamps in every window, and temples brightly illuminate altars to bring in the best for the upcoming year. Also, the date of the festival coincides with the return of the avatar of God, Sri Rama, to His ancestral kingdom after an exile of 14 years and many adventures. All the citizens welcomed Rama’s return home by brightening up the entire city of Ayodhya and setting off fireworks.

Postering for an Event

One of the advantages of staying in one place is that you get to know the area and people intimately. In common parlance, you get the area and its people wired. My wife and I know 500 places, bulletin boards, grocery stores, coffee shops, bagelries, etc., where you can put up posters for an event. For the Llama Fest we put up 1500 11X17 posters.

We save money by buying the paper at Xpedex. I choose a brand by the name of Fuller Brights which have a semi day-flow effect, jump out at you even from a distance. They cost about 33 cents per 11 X 17 sheet.

I lay out the posters myself on a MacIntosh using Quark Express, and the local copy shop lets us run them off for .05 each. Except for gas and time it’s a very effective and inexpensive way to let people know of an event.

Utah: Festival of India

Utah Valley’s KHQN Radio and Krishna Temple, located on South Main St. in Spanish Fork, will host the 16th Annual Festival of India on Saturday, September 14th, from 4 pm. The new Krishna Temple provides an expanded festival site and facilities for the popular event.

After 15 increasingly successful editions of the India Fest, few people in Utah County are ignorant of the fact that once a year, you can go to India without spending a lot of money. You can have India right in the middle of, of all places, ... Spanish Fork!

Over 5,000 people attended last year’s celebration, and India Fest 2002 could be the biggest one yet, thanks to the enthusiastic increase of promotional efforts on the part of the organizers, the majestic, overlooking presence of the Krishna temple at the festival site, and a natural amphitheater that can accommodate thousands.

The following are among the many artists who will perform at the Himalayan Performing Arts Festival on Saturday June 15, from 4 pm. The venue is KHQN Radio/Krishna temple at 8628 S Main St., Spanish Fork. In addition to the performing arts, there will be hot meals for sale, a fashion show by designer Veena Yadav, a grand procession, and dramas.

Holi Festival in Spanish Fork

The Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, invites all members of the public to celebrate the festival of Holi on Saturday, March 30th, from 4 pm.

Anuradha Prabhasankher from the Lasya Dance Company of San Francisco will present the stories behind this festival in a classical Indian dance format. Other elements of the festival will be observed with storytelling, musical interludes, the building of a bonfire, and the throwing of dry colors on friend and foe alike. The dry powders supplied by the temple are non-stain, but still, guests are cautioned not to wear their Sunday Best. Afterwards, everyone will enjoy a sumptuous vegetarian feast. If possible, guests are asked to bring a small offering of fruit, flowers, or even a cooked vegetarian preparation to augment the huge feast.

Temple Raises $6,000 for NY Firefighters

Local firefighters from the cities of Salem and Spanish Fork manned the admission gate at the Krishna Temple’s Annual festival of India last Saturday night (Sept 15th). A big sign posted at the gate indicated that all proceeds were to be forwarded to the NY City Firefighters’ fund.

 Tom Roe, the Fire Marshall for Utah County, was on hand throughout, and said, "These firemen are very touched by the Krishna’s temple’s decision to turn over these hard earned proceeds in this hour of need.

Spanish Fork-In a splendid blending of the opulent east and the pragmatic West, the Hare Krishna temple sits atop a hillside adjacent to a llama ranch that provides a source of income for the faith’s followers. The llamas, a South American import not associated with the east Indian faith, have over the past decade earned local Krishna worshippers thousands of dollars in revenue that helped build their palatial house of worship. Today, the two hoofed herbivores will be honored during the temple’s seventh annual Llama Festival, which will run from 4 pm through twilight.

Temple Opening in Spanish Fork

SPANISH FORK -- The 500 pairs of shoes -- old sneakers, new high heels, worn sandals -- piled at the entrance represented the range of people and religions at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple opening Saturday morning.

Barefooted adults and children glided across the white marble floors inside the temple to start the fire ceremony. Others padded across the Oriental rugs in their socks and sat cross-legged, observing the beginning of the daylong celebration that opened the first Indian-style Krishna temple in the United States.

Indian New Year at Spanish Fork

CHAKRA (Spanish Fork, Utah, USA): The New Year occurs during the lull between fall harvests and the onset of the monsoons. Thus it is a time of thanksgiving, and that corollary festival is called Anna Kuta (literally meaning "heaps of food"). Lord Krishna inaugurated this festival by inspiring the inhabitants of His village (Vrindavan) to worship the cows on this one day per year and to prepare a huge celebratory feast consisting of no less than 108 preparations.
